How to Buy the Right Size Bat For Softball or Baseball!

The right bat is the one that hitters can "get around with." And that's the bat that's not too big or heavy. Extra size and weight won't make the ball go any farther. It will only slow down the swing, and a fast swing with contact is the secret to hitting. Check the chart below to determine the bat that's going to be the easiest to handle. Then see how that bat and others in that general range feel. The bat that feels "right" is the bat that should be selected.

Bat Sizing Guide - For ages 5 - 16

  • Suggested only, but we use this same chart fitting ball players in our store and it has never failed us.  It has long been our philosophy to fit length first, then weight.  One ounce is about the same as 2 pennies taped to the end of the barrel.

  • When you go to buy!  You will need to choose the Length, Weight and DROP of a bat. However, just like in golf a driver is harder to hit than a 7 iron, a longer bat may be harder to hit than a shorter one depending on your age and your arm/ wrist strength.

  • Regarding youth, senior league and fast pitch bats - when deciding between 2 or 3 bats find the correct length first, then let the weight be the deciding factor.

  • Girls / womens fast pitch softball, you can add 1".

Length, Weight And WHAT?

THE DROP (-3, -5, etc.)

Bat Length Minus The Drop = Bat Weight

"The Drop" is a common term for describing the weight of an aluminum bat. It is unique to aluminum bats as the weight of a wood bat varies somewhat within each bat.

The drop simply means you take the length of the bat and subtract the drop to determine the weight.

For Example: TPX Omaha XS -3 is available in 32", 33" and 34". Therefore, a 32" would weigh 29 ounces, a 33" would weigh 30 ounces and so on.
